Trick-or-treating is a customary celebration for children on Halloween. Children go in costume from house to house, asking for treats such as candy or sometimes money, with the question, "Trick or treat?" The word "trick" refers to a (mostly idle) "threat" to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given.

Halloween costumes are traditionally modeled after supernatural figures such as monsters, ghosts, skeletons, witches, and devils. Over time, the costume selection extended to include popular characters from fiction, celebrities, and generic archetypes such as ninjas and princesses.

There are several games traditionally associated with Halloween parties. One common game is dunking or apple bobbing, in which apples float in a tub or a large basin of water and the participants must use their teeth to remove an apple from the basin. Big "Dont" In Your Resume

Finding a job these days is very hard and competition for every opening is fierce. According to employers that for every position advertised, hundreds of people send in applications for the job along with their resumes but majority of these applicants are rejected because only one person is needed for the position or they may be rejected for the job because of what they've put into their resumes. Below are some of the information not needed to be put in the resume and if you've been putting in any of the information cited, then you have stop it! You may be hurting your chances of getting hired.

1. Unrelated Part Time or Temporary Work
Whatever job you're applying for, your employer is not interested to the part time jobs you are working before especially if it is not related to the job advertised or they are looking for. So do not include it in the resume.

2. Unrelated Interests
Your interests or hobbies won't help you nail the job if they're unrelated to the position offered. Mention only interests that make you a more attractive candidate for the job and exclude all the rest.

3. Boring Words and Resume Clichés
Use powerful verbs to say the same thing. Words such as "team player", "detail-oriented" and other similar resume clichés are no longer effective in selling yourself to a prospective employer. Find appropriate words in the dictionary if necessary. For example for the word "team player", you can write: "cooperates and collaborates easily with other staff" or "carefully vigilant about details" instead of "detail oriented". A resume that's different than the usual run-of-the-mill submissions will grab the attention of HR people.

4. High School Diploma
If you only have a high school education, it may be prudent not to include that fact, unless you are currently a college student in pursuit of a degree.

5. Vague Objectives
If you want to list your objectives, make sure they are concrete. For example, something similar to the following can be very effective: Objective: To contribute to the success and profitability of the company through my effort, expertise and experience. A vague objective, such as the following, should not be in your resume. Objective: To help the company through my hard work.

6. Your Photo
Don't send your photo along with your application. Your face is unimportant to a potential employer, unless a picture is requested, which is a rare occurrence. Some people who have sent photographs with job applications the employer is likely to ignore all applications with a picture of the applicant attached.
7. Personal Qualities
Your age, race, religion, medical condition, disability, height, weight and sexual orientation are irrelevant. The law requires employers to disregard these qualities in their hiring decisions

8. Weaknesses
Don't broadcast your weaknesses. For example, don't write something like: "I'm good at word processing, but not quite good on Excel and Power Point.". Don't give an employer an excuse to reject you. If you're asked, however, after you've applied for a job, don't lie or exaggerate - your weakness will become evident in time, and could lead to your dismissal, if not disclosed initially if asked.

9. Negative Comments
Don't bad-mouth your previous boss. Don't complain about your financial troubles. If you were fired from your last position for stealing paper clips, don't mention it. If you were dishonorably discharged from the military, or did a prison stretch, don't mention it. You can be truthful about any of these issues only if asked.
10. Lies and/or Exaggerations
Don't lie about your experience, education or achievements. Don't increase your previous salary. Employers in these tough times have been verifying facts on applicant’s resumes, and almost every lie and exaggeration will be nailed.

11. Self-Serving Goals
If you're applying for a job in a certain industry, just to learn that business as a stepping stone to another position, don't mention that. Many younger applicants will write their long-term goals in their resumes which resulted to rejection of the job. Most employers want applicants to focus on the job they're offering, not on some future job.

12. Politics, Prejudices and Personal Preferences
Whatever your political persuasion, and whoever you dislike, should not be included in your resume. You may like or dislike the current government administration, but your potential employer will probably not care.

Landing a job right now is tough and if you follow the tips mentioned above and leaved out that information in your resume, you’ll have a better chance of getting the job you applied for.

October 31 - A Special Non-working Holiday

Malacanang has declared October 31 a special non-working day to give Filipinos more travel time during the traditional commemoration of the All Souls and Saints Day.

October 31, Monday, is declared a holiday throughout the country. It is under Proclamation 265 signed by Executive Secretary Pacquito Ochoa,

This is to "give full opportunity to our people to properly observe the day with all its religious commitment which invariably requires them to travel to and from different regions of the country," the proclamation noted.

All Saints Day on November 1, Tuesday, has earlier been declared as special non-working day.

50 things College Students Should Know

Every morning before doing my daily task in the office I always browse headlines of the news and I was fascinated with this article about college studies that is why I would like to share this to my reader. I hope you can get some learning out of it.
College study is very important because it is the basis for employment. The grades that you get from your college years are the ones to be presented when you apply for jobs. And it is one of the bases for the employers whether to hire you or not. That is why it is certainly important to study hard but aside from college grade there are some guidelines in order to adjust the college life.

1. A lot of things will be changing and different, your friends and yourself. Let them.

2. Chances are you will be bunking at the dorms. Remember to call your love ones back home a few times a week, even if just for a few minutes.

3. There’s something amazing about songs, for they bring back memories of your favorite moments. One way or another you will be listening to music on the radio or at parties, so why not make albums of these songs. Years down the road, they serve as records of your best time in life.

4. Rest when you need to, for it recharges your mind and body for your next journey.

5. Wondering when you are most productive? Are you diurnal or nocturnal? If you are nocturnal and function best at night, embrace and enjoy that. It may be the only time in your life when you can.

6. Some like to stay ahead of time while others work best under pressure. If you are the latter, chances are you will procrastinate till the last minute. Experiment with them, and see which works best for you.

7. As much as it is important to be a responsible adult, at least a few times during college, do something fun and irresponsible.

8. Make friends with your favorite professors. There is so much more to learn from each other than books.
9. Spend some time alone every single day. Sleeping doesn't count.

10. Go out and have fun, go on dates. Don't feel like every date has to turn into a relationship.

11. Don't date your roommate’s ex, it’ll be awkward.

12. When your friends' family visits, join them if possible. You will get to know your friends better and you'll get free food, etc.

13. Remember to send a hand-written letter to someone who made college possible for you and describe your adventures thus far. It will mean a lot to him/her now, and it will mean a lot to you in ten years when he/she shows it to you.

14. Embrace the differences between you and your classmates. Always ask yourself, "what can I learn from this person?" There are things more important than just books and grades.

15. All-nighters are entirely overrated. Start early and rest plenty.

16. Those in college while maintaining a long-distance relationship with someone from high school: you two have to decide how things will work out. Understand that you two will be in different environments, but do not let your relationship interfere with your college experience. If you don't want to date anyone else, that's totally fine! What's not fine, however, is missing out on a lot of defining experiences because you're on the phone with your boyfriend/girlfriend for three hours every day.

17. Working out differences is best done in person, not over Facebook, email, IM or anything else. Body language tells you more than just words.

18. Take risks.

19. Don't be afraid of (or excited by) the co-ed bathrooms. You have the same stuff, period.

20. Come Wednesday night, your week is more than half over. Thursday and Friday will only get better.

21. Accept failures and pick yourself up. It's how we grow. What matters is not that you failed, but that you refuse to stay down.

22. Take classes that have nothing to do with your major(s), purely for the fun of it. And you'll get to make more friends.

23. Think about the future, but enjoy the present. College is more than just a stepping stone.

24. When you're living on a college campus with hundreds of things going on every second of every day, watching TV is pretty much a waste of your time and money.

25. Don't be afraid of Cupid’s arrow and never take it for granted. Celebrate it, but don't let it define your college experience.

26. Much of the time you once had for pleasure is now gone. Keep a list of these things, so that you can start working on them when you graduate.

27. Setbacks may seem like the end of the world, but take a deep breath, and reflect on what you have learned.
28. Every once in awhile, there will come an especially powerful moment when you can actually feel that an experience has changed who you are. Embrace these, even if they are painful.

29. Stay open-minded, regardless of your political or religious beliefs. You can't learn if you're closed off.

30. If you need a job, find something that you enjoy. Just because it is work doesn't mean it has to suck.

31. Take breaks from leading; it's good to follow sometimes.

35. Just because you are in the bottom half of class now, doesn’t mean you suck. Things can only improve when at your worst. Don’t let your grades affect you, get used to it.

36. In ten years time, very few of you will look as good as you do right now. Revel in how hot you are before its too late.

37. In the long run, which college you attended doesn't matter as much as what you do with the opportunities you're given there. The college name on your resume doesn’t mean anything if that's the only thing on your resume. In college, you will have access to a variety of opportunities, grab them.

38. On the flip side, don't try to do everything at once.

39. Stay objective. If your emotions are getting in the way, ask for help.

40. With the high national obesity figures, it is important to eat right. But treat yourself sometimes; emotional health is just as important as physical health.

41. It’s ok to be a complete ass at least once. Cake in the face sounds good.

42. Wash your sheets at least once a month. You do not want to be buffet for bed bugs.

43. If you are in a relationship, bring your significant other to meet your friends. They may pick up things you don’t.

44. Experiment with food. Those strange looking dishes you friend is making may be taste pretty good. Expand your horizons.

45. Explore the campus, and find your own hideout like the ‘Room of Requirement’.

46. If you are no longer excited about your field of study, switch even if it complicates things. Life is too short for regrets.

47. Tattoos are permanent and costly. Be very certain.

48. Don't make fun of pre-frosh. You were there just a minute ago.

49. Enjoy every second of your college years. These seconds will fly by.

50. A time where learning is your key responsibility. Try to remember how lucky you are every day.

Enough talking, now go live the best years of your lives. Be yourself. Grab every moment, for there’s no way to turn back time.

Remembering Martial Law

It was on September 21, 1972 when Pres. Ferdinand E. Marcos declared Martial Law under proclamation 1081. What is the meaning of Martial Law? It was a law to suspend the civil rights and imposed military authority in the country. Marcos defended the declaration stressing the need for extra powers to put down the rising wave of violence allegedly caused by communists. The emergency rule was intended to eradicate the roots of rebellion and promote a rapid trend for national development. Marcos explained citing the provisions from the Philippine Constitution that Martial Law is a strategic approach to legally defend the Constitution and protect the welfare of the Filipino people from the dangerous threats posed by Muslim rebel groups and Christian vigilantes that places national security at risk during the time. He also added that Martial Law was not a military takeover but was then the only option to resolve the country’s dilemma on rebellion that stages national chaos threatening the peace and order of the country. According to Marcos that the emergency rule was to lead the country into what he calls a “New Society”.

Marcos used several events to justify martial law. Threat to the country’s security was intensifying following the re-establishment of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) in 1968. Supporters of CPP’s military arm, the New People’s Army, also grew in numbers in Tarlac and other parts of the country. The alleged attempt to the life of then Minister of Defense Juan Ponce Enrile gave Marcos a window to declare Martial Law. Marcos announced the emergency rule the day after the shooting incident. Marcos also declared insurgency in the south caused by the clash between Muslims and Christians, which Marcos considered as a threat to national security. The Muslims were defending their ancestral land against the control of Christians who migrated in the area. The minority group organized the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in Malaysia and pushed for the autonomy of Mindanao from the national government.

The move was initially supported by most Filipinos and was viewed by some critics as a change that solved the massive corruption in the country. Martial law ceased the clash between the executive and legislative branches of the government and a bureaucracy characterized by special interest. Marcos started to implement reforms on social and political values that hindered effective modernization. To match the accomplishments of its Asian neighbors, Marcos imposed the need for self-sacrifice for the attainment of national welfare. His reforms targeted his rivals within the elite depriving them of their power and patronage but did not affect their supporters (US Library of Congress, Martial Law and the Aftermath).

Thirty-thousand opposition figures and that’s include Senator Benigno Aquino, journalists, student and labor activists were detained at military compounds under the President’s command (Proclamation 1081 and Martial Law). The army and the Philippine Constabulary seized weapons and disbanded private armies controlled by prominent politicians and other influential figures (Proclamation 1081 and Martial Law). Marcos took control of the legislature and closed the Philippine Congress (Proclamation 1081 and Martial Law). Numerous media outfits were either closed down or operated under tight control (Proclamation 1081 and Martial Law). Marcos also allegedly funneled millions of the country’s money by placing some of his trusted supporters in strategic economic positions to channel resources to him. Experts call this the “crony capitalism.”

The deterioration of the political and economic condition in the Philippines triggered the decline of support on Marcos’ plans. More and more Filipinos took arms to dislodge the regime. Urban poor communities in the country’s capital were organized by the Philippine Ecumenical Council for Community and were soon conducting protest masses and prayer rallies. These efforts including the exposure of numerous human rights violations pushed Marcos to hold an election in 1978 and 1981 in an aim to stabilize the country’s chaotic condition. Marcos, in both events, won the election; however, his extended term as President of the Republic of the Philippines elicited an extensive opposition against his regime. Social unrest reached its height after former Senator Benigno Aquino was murdered. The incident sent thousands of Filipinos to the streets calling for Marcos’ removal from post. Turning again to his electoral strategy, Marcos held a snap election in 1986 but what he hoped will satisfy the masses only increased their determination to end his rule that seated Corazon Aquino, widow of Benigno Aquino, as President of the Philippines ousting Marcos from Malacañang Palace and ending the twenty-one years of tyrant rule. FREEDOM was achieved in a peaceful way.

Miss Shamcey Supsup was named third runner-up at the Miss Universe 2011pageant held at Credicard Hall in Sao Paulo, Brzil. Throughtout the competition, Shamcey was among the top placers in NBC com’s Miss Universe voting poll. During the pageant Shamcey impressed her fans with her answer during the Q and A portion. She was asked by Judge Vivica A. Fox if she would change her religion to marry someone she loves. She answered: “No. I would not change my religion because, first of all, I love my God who created me and if that person truly loves me, he must also love my God”.

Shamcey Gurrea Supsup was born on May 16, 1986 in Iligan City, Philippines. Later on their family transferred to General Santos City. She studied at Notre Dame of Lagao during her elementary years. Shamcey graduated as a Salutatorian from Makati High School. In college, she took up Architecture and graduated as magna Cum Laude from the University of the Philippines. Lea Salonga To Judge the Miss Universe 2011

I Love Holidays

It will be a long weekend to all the people in the Philippines after the Malacañang declared August 29 and 30 a non-working holidays.

August 29 is declared a holiday in commemoration of the National Heroes Day and August 30 is a holiday also in observance of the end of Ramadan of our Muslim brothers and sisters which is known as Eid’l Fitr. Eid’l Fitr is an Islamic festival of renewal, reconciliation and peace that marks the end of the holy month of fasting.

Therefore it is a good time for family bonding and doing some worthwhile things at home. For me, I will be doing my gardening, cleaning up some clutters and after that maybe I would treat myself to a salon makeover. Happy Holidays!

Kadayawan Festival 2011

Kadayawan Festival was one of the most awaited celebration here in Davao City. It was a week long celebration showcasing the different events and programs highlighting the bountiful harvest and giving honor and recognition of the different tribes domesticating the Davao Region. This year's celebration emphasizes the ten tribes of Davao. These were the Tausog; Matigsalog; Obu Manuvu; Maguindanao; Bagobo Tagabawa; Sama; Bagobo Klata; Maranao; Ata; and Kagan.

The highlight of the celebration was the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan. It was a street dance contest participated by different schools of different places in Mindanao. The most awaited event also was the Pamulak sa Kadayawan. It was a parade of big and small floats decorated with various flowers, fruits and plants which can be seen in Davao.

I have a great experienced together with my daughter and have fun taking pictures to the floats. It was ended a very successful celebration. Congratulations to the organizers and to the City Mayor Inday Sarah Duterte for making Kadayawan 2011 different from the previous years.

PR Update

I was really surprised when I saw my PR update of this blog drop from PR3 to PR1! I was super disappointed, but I know it is a normal cycle of a blog due to some reasons. Maybe I need to work out more in order to bring back my PR, and to my surprised again after a week of visiting to other blogs and updating my post it went up to PR2 and I was thankful then, that even if it did not reach back to PR3 still PR2 rank is a good rating. We just had our Retreat last April 14-17, 2011 held at the Monastery of Transfiguration located at the top of the mountain in San Jose Malaybalay Bukidnon. It was run and managed by the Benedictine Monks. The place is really a perfect place for retreat because you can really concentrate in meditation and prayer since the place is surrounded by plants and trees and different rare flowers. And all you can hear are the chirping of the birds, the sounds of the insects and animals. As you enter the chapel, you can feel the presence of God because of the silence. As the Monks are particular of the word SILENCE.

Former AFP Angelo Reyes Committed Suicide

Former Armed Forces Chief and Defense Secretary Angelo Tomas Reyes on Tuesday morning committed suicide by shooting himself in front of the grave of his mother at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina City.

The Maguindanao Massacre A Year After

It’s been a year since the massacre of 57 civilians in Maguidanao shocked the whole world wherein they are brutally killed and dumped in a mass grave on a hillside above the town of Ampatuan. The whole country commemorated the so called Maguidanao massacre which until now, the families of the victims waited for the final justice of their love ones. On November 23, families of the 57 victims will participate in a motorcade that will start in General Santos City and end at the crime site, in hilly Sitio Masalay in Barangay Salman, Ampatuan town. Aside from the motorcade, the Nov. 23 Movement will also plant 58 trees at the crime site in honor of the 58 victims of the massacre – the 58th being Reynaldo “Bebong" Momay, a photojournalist for the Tacurong City-based Midland Review whose body has yet to be recovered.

I hope that the present government will deal fairly about the case, punished the people who were involved and mastermind of the brutal killing. Let justice prevails!

The only thing the Devil would let him is a coal, that he put into a turnip. So I will give you the steps on how to make a Halloween pumpkin. You don’t need to be very skilled in order to make your own Jack-o-lantern, but it takes time to carve a pumpkin. But it is worth the effort, and let trick-or-treaters know you will open the doors for them. The inside of the pumpkin can be turned into good food.

Buy a large pumpkin in any shape that you like. The larger the better. It should be fresh.
Draw a circle on the top of the pumpkin around the stem. This is to mark the hole to be cut. Make sure the opening is large enough to let your hand go through it.
Cut the opening carefully with a sharp knife. Hold the knife in a 45 degree angle, to make the top as nicely cut as possible. The round part that you cut off the pumpkin is supposed to work as a lid on top of the Jack-o-lantern after the carving is done.
Scoop out the seeds and the pulp from the inside with a large spoon. Save the seeds. They are excellent snacks.
Clean the pumpkin well. To make the pumpkin hold a little bit longer, the pumpkin can be soaked in a solution of water and bleach for a couple of hours. Use a very small amount of bleach.
Draw a funny face on the surface of the pumpkin. The more inexperienced you are, the easier the face should be. Use a thick felt-tip pen. Make the face details large enough as this makes it more easy to cut the face right and gets the proportions of the face vs. the pumpkin right. A small face will not get the same effect.
Cut according to the drawings right through the pumpkin.
Place a candle inside the Jack-o-lantern. When lit, the top of the pumpkin should be opened up.

Devotion to the Holy Rosary

It’s October once again and this month is devoted to the Holy Rosary in contemplation to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Praying the Rosary is the most powerful prayer at all times. It has been treasured in the church for many centuries. The Rosary is a summary of Christian faith in language and prayers inspired by the Bible.
The devotion of the rosary originated during the 13th century in Spain by St. Dominic. He founded the order of Preachers, or Dominicans. He went to France as a missionary to convert some people. One day, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Dominic, holding a rosary in her hand. She told him that the devotion of the Rosary would convert sinners and obtain great graces from God. She said “This is the precious gift which I leave to you “. From then on, St Dominic taught the people how to say the Rosary. Later, at Lourdes, France, in 1858, the Blessed Virgin appeared to Bernadette and said the rosary with her. At Fatima, Portugal, in 1917, she said the rosary with the three children to whom she appeared and said: “I am the Lady of the Rosary, and I have come to warn the faithful to amend their lives and ask pardon for their sins. People must not continue to offend the Lord who is already so deeply offended. They must say the rosary “.
The Rosary is sacramental. It calls to mind the most important events in the lives of Jesus and Mary. These events are called the Mysteries. I believe in the saying that goes “The family that prays together stays together”. Below are the four Mysteries of the Holy Rosary. I hope people will devote this month in praying the Holy Rosary for the conversion of sinners and world peace.

The province of Davao is known throughout the world as the capital city of durian. Visiting Davao is always a treat. It never ceases to amaze every visitors coming because of the fruits it served. People here are so delight because of the unending supply of the durian fruit staring from the month of June up to the present. You can see everywhere and anywhere in the streets people who are selling durian fruits which are so affordable. This year is the most blessed year because of the abundant supply of the fruit that ranges from P15-30 per kilo depending on the variety. Have you tried tasting it? Well, they say “Once you have tasted durian, you will never leave Davao” That seems to be true to people like me who find joy in eating the pale yellow flesh with creamy custard like texture and very sweet taste that comes from the hard thorny rind. Others even said that “It smells like hell but tastes like heaven”, which is true because it is even banned in hotels and public transportation like airplanes because of its foul smell but to tell you once you tasted it you will crave for more.

If you don’t like to eat the fresh, people in Davao created various recipes with its main ingredient is the durian flesh. They are already available in the market like durian candy, durian pie, durian ice cream, and durian cappuccino. There is a secret way to wash away the smell of your hands after eating durian. You wash your hands with the durian seed to get rid of the smell.

It is really hard when somebody in the family is sick. Everything is affected especially on the kind of food to eat. Recently my mother is claiming for pain on her both knees. The doctor said it was arthritis. We know that arthritis has many don’ts when it comes to food. That is why we only served fish in every meal which sometimes feels I don’t like anymore but when I read about the benefits that we can get from fish, then I’d rather go for fish than meat. When it comes to nutrition, fish is deemed more healthful. Fish can lower the rate at which the liver manufactures fat. It reduces the tendency of blood to clot. It repairs the arteries which are damage by the lack of oxygen due to fatty deposits. Lowers blood pressure and lower the risk of oral and digestive tract cancer by as much as 40% and esophageal cancer by 30%. It also reduces tumor growth. It is proven beneficial to rheumatoid arthritis. Fish oil can lower joint swelling, ease morning stiffness and lessen fatigue in people. Good thing about fish is it blocks breast cancer because of the omega 3 fatty acid which boosts the immune system’s ability to respond to develop tumors. Fish has Vit. A, C and D, iodine, phosphorus, calcium and copper which are essential for our health. So don’t ignore your fish now. Eat a lot of it instead of meat.

I would like to share this very inspiring story about a husband complaining about his wife who is not working and only stays at home. I hope this will change the concept of every husband towards their wife, instead admire and love them more after reading this story. This is an emailed story from a friend and it is already circulating worldwide but for the sake of other people who have not read. This is the story and you can also share this to your friends especially the married man.

A man was sick and tired of going to work every day while his wife stayed home. He wanted her to see what he went through so he prayed:

"Dear Lord: I go to work every day and put in 8 hours while my wife merely stays at home. I want her to know what I go through, so please allow her body to switch with mine for a day. Amen.

God, in his infinite wisdom, granted the man's wish. The next morning, sure enough, the man awoke as a woman. He arose, cooked breakfast for his mate, awakened the kids, set out their school clothes, fed them breakfast, packed their lunches, drove them to school, came home and picked up the dry cleaning, took it to the cleaners and stopped at the bank to make a deposit, went grocery shopping, then drove home to put away the groceries, paid the bills and balanced the check book. He cleaned the cat's litter box and bathed the dog.

Then it was already 1 P.M. and he hurried to make the beds, do the laundry, vacuum, dust, and sweep and mop the kitchen floor. Ran to the school to pick up the kids and got into an argument with them on the way home. Set out milk and cookies and got the kids organized to do their homework, then set up the ironing board and watched TV while he did the ironing.

At 4:30 he began peeling potatoes and washing vegetables for salad, breaded the pork chops and snapped fresh beans for supper.

After supper, he cleaned the kitchen, ran the dishwasher, folded laundry, bathed the kids, and put them to bed. At 9 P.M . he was exhausted and, though his daily chores weren't finished, he went to bed where he was expected to make love, which he managed to get through without complaint.

The next morning, he awoke and immediately knelt by the bed and said: - "Lord, I don't know what I was thinking. I was so wrong to envy my wife's being able to stay home all day. Please, oh! oh! please, let us trade back."

The Lord, in his infinite wisdom, replied: "My son, I feel You have learned your lesson and I will be happy to change things back to the way they were. You'll just have to wait nine months, though. You got pregnant last night."

The End of Ramadan

Eid-il-Fitr as known to the the Christian majority and other non-Muslims as "Wakas ng Ramadan" or End of Ramadan. It has been recognized by the Filipino Government as a regular holiday by virtue of Republic Act No. 9177 signed into law last Nov. 13, 2002. The law was enacted in deference to the Muslim-Filipino community and to promote peace among other religions in the Philippines. For this year, September 10 is declared a special non-working holiday by Pres. Aquino in giving tribute to the end of the Ramadan of our Muslim brothers and sisters.

Fish is the most preferred viand in every meal because it has a great source of protein and contains healthy fats that will help reduce cholesterol and improve health. It has omega 3 fatty acids that help keep the heart and even improve the mood of every person. That is why it is important to know the different ways of preparing fish and enhancing the flavor or creating a new way of cooking it. Though I’m not an expert cook but I see to it that the fish is tasty. I drop some herbs and mix together with sauces. Just tips for everybody, if the fish is not really fresh, add some lemon, lime or apple juice. Put some lemon juice on the fish or put a small amount of wine or vinegar to enhance the taste of the fish. If you are going to marinate a fish, you should always keep the fish in the refrigerator while it is marinating. The marinated sauce of the fish can be cooked as sauce of the fish. Fish can be fried in many ways. Try adding both butter and oil to vary the taste. Dust the fish with flour or breadcrumbs as in my case I put some ground garlic before frying or dip in beaten egg and sprinkle some herbs such as parsley.

Who Is Maria Venus Raj?

Maria Venus Raj was born out of wedlock in Doha Qatar.Upon separation of her parents, Maria Venus Raj was taken to Bato, Camarines Sur as an infant and was registered by an aunt as Philippine-born to Roman Catholic parents. Her mother was a former tenant farmer and dressmaker who brought Maria Venus Raj up as a child. Maria Venus Raj lived in a nipa hut made of wood, bamboo and anahaw leaves with no electricity in the middle of a sprawling rice field in the rural Bato town for more than twenty years. She allegedly used rice paddy dikes for her early training where she eventually developed her distinct catwalk. The youngest among five children, Maria Venus Raj started joining local beauty pageants at 17 years old. She also joined oratorical contests at San Vicente High School where her english teacher served as her coach. With her victories in major contests, Venus Raj had started to buy land on installment basis for her mother as a means of improving their livelihood.

Maria Venus Raj obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Communications Arts, major in Journalism, at Bicol University in Albay, with Latin Honors (Cum Laude). She graduated through the scholarship that she received from Francis Papica Foundation. Back in the Philippines, she works as an Information Assistant for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Region V. She also works as a part-time fashion model.

Venus competed with more than 80 stunning ladies and received overwhelming support not just from the Philippines but also from the Filipino community in Las Vegas. To recall, the 21-year-old Bicolana was briefly dethroned after Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Incorporated (BPCI) discovered inconsistencies with the information she disclosed to the organizers and the papers she submitted for the competition. But later on the BPCI retracted their decision and reinstalled her as the representative to the Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas. And finally Venus make it to the top five and bring pride to our country being the 4^th runner of the recently held pageant in Las Vegas. The Filipinos are really proud of you. Congratulations!

Mernadeth Sicutan from the Ata tribe Won the Hiyas Ng Kadayawan 2010

Mernadeth Sicutan won as this year's Hiyas sa Kadayawan during the coronation night held last August 20, 2010 at the Davao City Recreational Center or Almendras Gym. She studied at Rizal Memorial College taking up Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education. She was a crowd favorite during the pageant because of her authentic beauty, charm and intelligence despite of her petite appearance. She was proud to represent the Ata tribe. She won PhP 50,000 cash plus other prizes from the sponsors for being this year's Festival Gem.
Among other winners were 1st and 2nd runners up winners are Jalma Bete Mohamad from the Kalagan tribe and Fatima Sharine Jadjuli from the Tausug tribe, respectively. Mohamad won PhP 40,000 cash plus other prizes from the sponsors as this year's Hiyas sa Kauswagan (Gem of Progress).Meanwhile, Jadjuli won PhP 30,000 cash plus other prizes for being this yesar's Hiyas sa Tingusbawan (Gem of Fulfilled Promise).

What is Kadayawan means to all Davaoneos?

Kadayawan" is derived from the Mandaya word "mandayaw" The term "Kadayawan" is derived from the Mandaya word “madayaw”, a warm and friendly greeting used to explain a thing that is valuable, superior, beautiful, good, or profitable.

Long time ago, Davao’s ethnic tribes residing at the foot of Mount Apo would converge during a bountiful harvest. This ritual serves as their thanksgiving to the gods particularly to the “Manama” (the Supreme Being).....

Various farming implements, fruits, flowers, vegetables, rice and corn grains were displayed on mats as villagers give their respect and thanks for the year's abundance. Singing, dancing and offerings to their divine protectors are the highlights of this ritual.

Although times have changed, this practice of thanksgiving or “pahinungod” is still very much practiced by modern day Dabawenyos. This tradition flourished and evolved into an annual festival of thanksgiving.

In the 1970’s, Mayor Elias B. Lopez, a Bagobo, initiated tribal festivals featuring the lumad and the Muslim tribes of Davao City where they showcase their dances and rituals of thanksgiving.

Later in 1986, a program called "Unlad Proyekto Davao" was initiated by the government which was aimed to unite the Dabawenyos after the turbulent Martial Law era. At that time, the festival was called "Apo Duwaling," a name created from the famous icons of Davao: Mt. Apo, the country's highest peak; Durian, the king of fruits; and Waling-waling, the queen of orchids.

“Apo Duwaling” was meant to showcase the city as a peaceful destination to visit and to do business after 1986 EDSA Revolution.

Finally in 1988, City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte renamed the festival as "Kadayawan sa Dabaw" to celebrate the bountiful harvest of Davao’s flowers, fruits and other produce as well as the wealth of the city’s cultures. To this day, the festival continues to honor the city's richness and diverse artistic, cultural and historical heritage in a grand celebration of thanksgiving for all of Davao City's blessings.

I love cooking and it is already my passion to try new recipes I got from the net. But in the process of cooking I discovered minor difficulties in the preparation of the ingredients which somehow affect the length of time. I would like to share some simple tips to make food preparation easy.

Peeling garlic cloves.
For a quicker peeling of garlic cloves, you must have to microwave them first for 10 seconds. They will pop out of their skin instantly.

Storing of apples and carrots.
Don’t store apples and carrots in the same compartment inside the refrigerator because apples emit a gas that makes the carrots bitter.

Easy way to steam veggies.
Simply place a colander over a pan of boiling water, pour prepared veggies in and put a lid over the top for 10-12 mins. The veggies will be cooked and crunchy but be careful in getting the veggies, because the strainer will be hot!

How to cut meat into thin slices.
When cooking beef or pork which required to cut the meat as thin as possible. You must have to cut it while it still partially frozen.

Tips for cooking beans.
When cooking beans, when you have any additional ingredients, such as acidic substances, like lemon juice, vinegar, tomatoes, ketchup or wine, it should be added at the end of the cooking time, since acid makes the beans firm.

Filipino People Remembers the First Year Death Anniversary of President Cory Aquino

Last Sunday, August 1, 2010 marked the first death anniversary of late President Corazon “Cory” Aquino. The celebration was led by his son President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III together with his family, relatives, friends and followers gathered at La Salle Greenhills in San Juan City to attend the tribute mass.
After a short program, President Aquino unveiled the commemorative marker signifying the legacy of his mother and her contribution in shaping the country. The President was joined by his sisters Ballsy, Pinky, Viel and Kris with two sons Joshua and Baby James. Then a mass shortly followed after the unveiling. There are also politicians, celebrities and other known personalities attended the said celebration.

A Filipino photojournalist and photo mosaic artist attempted to break world records by unveiling a 250 x 250 feet photo mosaic of Philippine democracy icon, the former president Cory Aquino last Saturday at Quirino Grandstand in Manila. He is Revoli Cortez, award-winning photojournalist and photo mosaic artist, first began with the idea right after the death of President Cory Aquino in August last year. The emotions that overflowed during the Cory’s wake and the pile of pictures he had while covering the former president for two years were the inspiration behind his masterpiece.

He said “In the end, I realized two-year supply of pictures was not enough to create and complete the project. So what we did together with the organizers and Ms. Deedee Sytangco was we opened the competition to the public. Anybody who wanted to submit a photo could just e-mail me. This resulted to a great outpour of pictures from the public,”

The event was attended by President Benigno Aquino III, Vice President Jejomar Binay, Mayor Alfredo Lim of Manila and Chris Carrion from the Spirit of EDSA movement.

“This photo mosaic is a symbol of hope, the real challenge however is in making Cory Aquino’s legacy part of our daily lives,” President Aquino said during the event.

Do you love your Mom? Do you say thank you for all the deeds she has done for you? Moms are God’s best gifts to the family. And who are these moms? They are the ones who make a difference in the lives of their family. Below are some of the reasons why they make a difference.

They make home a welcome place. Even how busy moms are they see to it that the house is always a welcome place for everybody.
They grow with their kids. There is no substitute fro spending time with your children. Spectacular or sensational moments to children are nothing. Just simple joys of doing things together. Moms cannot build a solid, loving and caring family without growing up with their children. Therefore, moms who make a difference are available whenever their children need them.
They pray with their kids. Praying for the children is a gesture of love, genuine love. Whenever children see or hear their moms pray for them, they feel loved and cared for. By praying together, moms not only get a glimpse of their children’s hearts; children are also introduced to the miracle of answered prayers.
They take time to express their love. A hug, a tap on the shoulder, a love note, words of encouragement, a candy or chocolate dropped in the bag for their children to find are simple expressions of love.
They make wise investments. Teaching children household chores, money investment and reasonable choices is a wise investment. Children will not only grow up to be practical and independent but delight to have around. Wise moms also invest in their children’s lessons in piano, violin, painting, singing though it’s expensive but these hobbies can serve as a fallback after college.
They respect their husbands. A wife who respects and loves her husband is a pearl of great peace.
They value their parents-in-law.

Although the mother’s role is important, the role of wife is in some ways even more important and more vital. The wife who confuses the order of things and puts her child before her husband will most probably have a husband who feels neglected, and an unsatisfied may grow to resent any child who seems to take first place in his wife’s life. Since this wife may now lack a companion and lover, she sometimes attempts to make a substitute husband out of her child. She may also communicate frustration and low regard for her husband to the child, which may even cause the child to develop disrespect or even hatred for the father.

Another basic fact a wife needs to understand is to accept her husband for what he us and not try to change him. Attempts to change a man usually end in nagging, which creates tension in the home. A wife needs to concentrate on her husband’s good qualities and express admiration and appreciation for his physical, mental and spiritual capabilities. Tell your husband how smart, handsome, trim and wonderful he looks to you. Be understanding of the heavy burdens he shoulders – the difficulties and hardships he faces in bearing the financial responsibilities for the family. Be his biggest moral booster, and make home fun to return to. It is almost impossible for a man to feel tenderly about a woman who is constantly criticizing him or suggesting that he must change.

Marriage brings status satisfaction to a man. He expects marriage to provide some of the feelings of importance that he craves. When a child enters the scene, a husband quickly learns that the attention he once had all to himself must now be divided. Father and child are not in competition for a woman’s affections.
It is mostly felt by fathers but it becomes essential that husband and wife schedule occasions to be together without interference from a child. They must set aside time and money for leisure activities outside the home to rekindle the fires of romance that tend to get lost due greater responsibilities in the family. Select activities that appeal to both of you. Forget your problems and concentrate on each other.
Someone has said that the most important thing a man can do for his children is to love his wife. A good father is first and foremost a good husband, love your wife. Tell her that you cherish the way she looks and that she us as lovely as the day you married her. Express your love through small acts of compliments, appreciation of her devotion in the home, and thoughtful remembrances such as flowers, cards or a dinner out. Keep the sparks of affection glowing in your marriage. An attentive husband presents a proper picture of a man’s role to both sons and daughters. The male plays a strong role in holding a family together.

I would like to share practical tips on how you can live a simple, organized and clutter-free life.

Have a place for everything and always put everything in its proper place- dirty clothes in the hamper, books on the bookshelf and clean clothes inside the closet. This practice will help you remember and locate things easily. Organize clothes in the locker or closet by categories (blouses, shirts, skirts, pants, lingerie’s, etc.)
Clean one day at a time. Ask your family not to leave things, anywhere most especially on the floor, tables and chairs. If they don’t want them redeemed, remind them orally or in written form to put the things back in their places after use. This is to avoid clutter inside the house.
Get rid of stuff that ate not used anymore like old clothes, receipts and notes. Donate partially used clothes, books and toys that are rarely used.
Avoid being too sentimental to the point of keeping all the kitchen ware collections of your grandmother’s mom even if you don’t have enough space in the house to store those things.
Set a time for a general cleaning either at the middle and end of the year or every semestral break of the students. Take this time to consider the stuff you’d like to keep and those you want to give or throw away.
Live simply. Buy only the things that your family needs, not the things that you want. As much as possible, keep away from mall sales even if the promo ads would says “up to 60% discount”. This is to avoid drowning up your own collection.

The State of the Nation Address (Filipino: Talumpati sa Kalagayan ng Bayan, abbreviated SONA) is an annual event in the Republic of the Philippines, in which the President of the Philippines reports on the status of the nation, normally to the resumption of a joint session of the Congress (the House of Representatives and the Senate). This is a duty of the President as stated in Article VII, Section 23 of the 1987 Constitution.

I admired and salute the braveness of our President in exposing the true scenario of our country from the previous government officials whom we entrusted our economy. I hope it will be the beginning of change so that our nation will achieve progress in the next coming years of his governance.

The Divine Mercy Statue

Have you been to Cagayan de Oro City lately? If not then it’s time for you to visit the place because of this very beautiful and holy place specifically located in the place of Villanueva, Cagayan de Oro City. This is the gigantic statue of the Divine Mercy.
You can reach the place by riding a jeepney, which is 30-45 minutes ride from the city proper of Cagayan de Oro City and single a motorcycle or “habal-habal” to deliver you to the gate of the holy place.
I visited the place last April 2010 after our three days retreat at Betania Malasag, Cagayan de Or City. It was a great experienced being in that place because every person who were going to enter the place must wear decent attire like no short pants. But you can still enter the place because they have prepared red skirt to wear as you enter the place. And I was one of those who were able to wear the red skirt during our visit because I was wearing pedal or three-fourth pants together with my other officemate. That is why if you plan to visit the place, refrain from wearing short pants if you don’t like to wear the red skirt they provided.
The place was so amazing and holy because you can see the giant statue of the Divine Mercy surrounded by beautiful and blooming flowers. If given the chance I really wanted to visit the place again and I wanted to climb the statue through the stairways from the bottom to the heart of the statue.

1. Chicken soup has to be at the top of the list. Hot chicken soup helps clear clogged airways, and the nourishing broth will give you more energy. Add plenty of vegetables, including onion and garlic, for extra healing power.
2. Hot and spicy food. Garlic, hot peppers or hot sauce helps to break up congestion. Cook ethnic foods that contain these ingredients, or simply ad hot sauce to foods for extra zip.
3. Garlic. This fragrant bulb seems to help reduce symptoms of cold and flu. Add garlic liberally to your favorite foods, or even chew a raw clove or two.
